What is cataract?

  • Cataract means that the lens of the eye is no longer clear! Normal lens of the eye is located just behind the iris (the brown tissue in the picture that gives the eye its special color). Any opacity in the lens is referred to as “cataract”.
  • Cataract is usually a disease of older ages, but it can less frequently happen at younger ages and can be congenital as well.
  • Patients with cataract feel gradual diminution of vision, if left untreated the eye will block the vision totally with time and if neglected more may lead to complications.
  • Cataract can treated easily by simple surgery; for this it is considered as the commonest cause of reversible blindness in the world.
